Ying E Chi Break Away

Representatives of Ying E Chi accused Broadway Cinematheque of turning the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival into a private enterprise after the company registered the festival as a private limited company.   A previous attempt by Ying E Chi to register it had failed.   The move by Broadway resulted in allegations from Ying E Chi that Broadway had used government money to subsidise what was now a commercial entity.

Vincent Chui, a founding member of Ying E Chi, said,  ‘We have invested over HK$1 million (£74,850) of our public funding and manpower to develop the HKAFF into the second largest film festival in Hong Kong.   It is unacceptable for Broadway to make it the private property of its parent company, Edko.’

Ying E Chi launched an internet campaign claiming that the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival had been usurped, but their efforts had little effect on ticket sales for films shown at the event. [ADD]
