20^th Century-Fox, the distributor of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, said they had no idea how an unfinished version of the film was leaked onto the internet.   The Hugh Jackman film, which was missing a number of special effects and featured temporary sound and music, was circulated online late on Tuesday 31^st March 2009.   It was not due for release until 1^st May 2009.   The leak came at a time when internet piracy was a hot topic, with Hollywood studios spending millions to prevent piracy and a verdict in the Pirate Bay trial still outstanding.   Despite Hollywood’s efforts, pirated versions of most films usually appeared online soon after their theatrical release.   File-sharing monitoring firms estimated that the copy had been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times in its first 24 hours online, and the FBI and Motion Picture Association of America both launched investigations into the incident.
