24/08/2009: Jury
Imprisons Pirate Yong Hong Lin, a shop proprietor, was found guilty by a jury of selling music and movies illegally after New South Wales police found more than 16,000 discs in his store. The discs, many of which were Hollywood movies, had been imported from China. Lin was selling them for A$7. Although 18 people had previously been convicted for similar crimes in Australia, following amendments to the country’s Copyright Act in 2007, Lin’s case marked the first time an offender had been found guilty by a jury of his peers. The jury found Lin guilty of 15 of the 31 charges he faced after retiring for 12 hours to consider their verdict following a three-week trial at Sydney’s District Court.
