26/8/2009: The Manabu Oshio Ecstasy Scandal:

Manabu Oshio

Actor and pop singer Manabu Oshio was arrested by police on Monday 3rd August following the death of a 30-year-old woman at the exclusive Roppongi Hills business and entertainment complex the previous day.

Oshio reportedly met the woman while she was working at a Tokyo club, and went to the apartment with her.   He told police that the woman gave him an ecstasy tablet and also took two herself.  She quickly became ill and Oshio was unable to revive her.   It was believed that he then fled the scene after contacting his manager who informed the police of the incident at around 9.30pm on Sunday 2nd August.

A urine test conducted on Oshio in connection to the woman’s death revealed concentrations of MDMA (ecstasy) and he was immediately arrested.  A post mortem carried out on the woman concluded that she died between 3pm and 5pm on the Sunday – more than four hours after her death was reported to police.

Soon after the scandal broke, Oshio was dropped by his agency, Avex, and on 26th August 2009 the producers of Dakara oretachi wa, asa o matteita (So We Have Been Waiting for Morning) announced that the film would be shelved indefinitely.  The future of two more of Oshio’s un-released films – Isabel Coixet’s Map of the Sounds of Tokyo and Hideo Sakaki’s Yukai Rhapsody – hung in the balance.
