20/2/09: China Plans Major Film Output in 2009
Announcing the government’s plans to produce 50 films commemorating revolution that swept the communists to power, the China Film Group said that the films were aimed at ‘implementing the central government's instructions on public-spirited art work for the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China, and also to promote film production...and to create a positive and harmonious cultural atmosphere.’
The films would celebrate various aspects of the country’s history since Mao Tse-tung’s rise to power in 1949 following a bitter civil war with Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist KMT. Film subjects would include tributes to architectural landmarks such as Tiananmen Square, hero worker figures such as ‘Iron Man Wang', and moments of national honour in times of adversity such as 2008’s earthquake in the Sichuan province. The announcement followed the news that the ‘most powerful line-up in the history of Chinese film,’ would feature in ‘The Great Cause of China’s Foundation’ which began filming in February 2009.
