24/2/2009: Edison Chen Gives Evidence

Edison Chen

Actor and pop icon Edison Chen saw his career disintegrate in 2008 when images of him engaging in sexual acts with a number of women surfaced on the internet.   Following an investigation amidst an explosion of sensational headlines in the Hong Kong media, computer technician Ho-Chun Sze was charged with gaining access to Chen’s computer for the purpose of dishonest gain.   Ho-Chun was an employee of the computer repair shop to which Chen had taken a faulty laptop for repair.

Chen was giving evidence to Canadian and Hong Kong legal personnel in a court in Vancouver because he had so far refused to travel to Hong Kong to give evidence.

Chen responded aggressively to questioning in the court, and insisted he would not answer questions of an intimate nature:  'I decided today not to answer any questions of an intimate nature regarding any of the girls,’ he said. ‘I'm determined to protect their innocence. They have suffered enough.   I believe it is wrong to them, for me to state facts that I believe are irrelevant to this case.’

Chen went on to say, ‘There was nothing forced. This is a matter between two people who agreed to something.’

Chen had taken hundreds of photographs of sexual liaisons with a number of women, many of them well-known actresses and musicians, from 2001 to 2006.   He said he showed the photographs to the women but to nobody else and that the images were kept in a password protected file on a computer that never left his house.   He described seeing the images on the internet as a ‘huge shock.’

‘I never showed them and never intended for anyone to see them,’’" he said. ‘Those were all very private matters and never intended to be seen by anyone but myself. ... no one should have this but me.’

Chen told the court he believed the files, which he thought he had deleted and had believed were not recoverable, had been copied when he took the computer to a shop for repair.   ‘I did not know about encrypted data or securing the trash,’ he said.  ‘In my opinion, when you deleted a file and put it in the trash bin, it was deleted… They invaded my privacy and stole my things in a very direct way.’

Chen was surrounded by a number of bodyguards from a private security firm when he left the court house.  As his two-car motorcade left the court-house’s car park bodyguards knocked two reporters to the ground. [ADD]
