31/7/2009: Another Broadside Aimed at Pirate Bay:

A Dutch court’s decision to impose a ban on The Pirate Bay, the file-sharing website, on 30th July 2009 was the result of court action brought against the site by Stichting Brein, a trading organisation funded by copyright holders.   The judge ruled that Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi, Fredrik Neij and Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, the operators of the site who were sentenced to one year’s imprisonment in April 2009, would be fined €30,000 (£25,627) a day up to a maximum of €3 million (£2.56 million) if they failed to comply, although there was some doubt as to whether the ruling would be enforceable.   Kolmisoppi, the spokesperson for the site, confirmed that the trio would appeal the ruling.

On the same day, Global Gaming Factory X confirmed that it expected to complete its acquisition of the site on 27th August 2009, apparently scotching mounting internet speculation that the deal was ‘dead in the water.’   Following a meeting of the GGF board, Hans Pandeya, the group’s chief executive confirmed, ‘We are in final negotiations with a global player about a file-sharing agreement and we are in discussions with industrial partners on how to make a profit from the strong brand.’
