15/7/2009: Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno Banned in Ukraine:

Sacha Baron Cohen in Bruno (2009)

Sacha Baron Cohen, the creator of Borat, found the movie about his latest creation, the gay Austrian fashion reporter Bruno, banned from Ukraine after nine members of its’ 14-strong culture ministry commission voted for a total ban.

The commission cited the film’s ‘artistically unjustified exhibition of sexual organs and sexual relations, homosexual acts in a blatantly graphic form, obscene language, sadism [and] anti-social behaviour,’ as the reason for its decision.   The country, a former member of the Soviet bloc was considered by many to have struggled to adjust to European attitudes following the pro-democracy Orange Revolution of 2004, and it was likely that the ban was prompted by fears about offending deeply religious sections of its population.

The film was due to be released across the country week commencing 19th July 2009.
