18/3/2009: Bollywood's New Releases in Danger

Talks between the United Producers’ Forum and multiplex owners over the split of profits from screenings of Bollywood movies had been ongoing since February 2009 with neither party giving much ground.   The Forum, representatives of such major producers as Yash Raj Films, UTV Motion Pictures, and the Indian arms of Sony Pictures and Warner Bros, were insisting on a 50/50 split regardless of a film’s budget or the quality of its cast, while the Multiplexes favoured a performance-related division of revenue.

Industry estimates put the total at stake due to delayed releases of such films as Jashan, Kaminay, Shortkut, and Life Partner at approximately 3 billion rupees (£41.2 million).   A bottleneck of releases following any eventual resolution of the dispute was likely to have a detrimental effect on anticipated profits.
