10/3/2009: Smuggled Recording at Bronson Premiere

Bronson (2009)

Nicholas Winding-Refn’s biopic of Britain’s self-styled ‘most violent prison,’ played on-screenby Tom Hardy, received invaluable media publicity when the representatives of the Prison Officer’s Association publicly denounced the making of the tape which, they insisted, compromised security at the high security prison in Wakefield, Yorkshire in which he is imprisoned.

56-year-old Bronson, who has spent 34 years in jail after initially being sentenced to seven years for armed robbery, told the audience at the film’s premiere, ‘I'm proud of this film, because if I drop dead tonight, then I live on. I make no bones about it, I really was... a horrible, violent, nasty man. I'm not proud of it, but I'm not ashamed of it because every punch I ever flung I’ve taken 21 back. I deserve everything I got, everything.’   Bronson also added, ‘As long as my mother enjoys the film, I’m happy.’

Glyn Travis, spokesman for the Prison Officer’s Association, said, ‘We've got grave concerns that people have abused the privilege of speaking to and visiting Charles Bronson while in prison. As a result of that they have managed to secrete or record a telephone call or conversation which has now been played in a public forum. Clearly somebody has abused the rules.’

A representative of the Ministry of Justice said the government was taking steps to ensure there were no further violations, adding that, ‘The Prison Service has taken appropriate steps to ensure that Charles Bronson does not profit financially from this film while he remains in prison.    Any unauthorised interviews with the prisoner have been made in direct contravention of Prison Service policy. Steps have been taken to ensure that this does not happen again’ [ADD]
