1/9/2009: Film Critics
Shot Dead
Filipino-Canadian film critic Alexis Tioseco and his partner, Slovenian journalist Nika Bohinc, were shot dead late on Tuesday 1st September 2009 when they returned to their home at 39 Times Street, Brgy, West Triangle, Quezon City, Manila, to find burglars ransacking the place. The couple were shot several times by one of three men. It was believed that Tioseco and Bohinc’s helper, identified only as Criselda, allowed the burglars entry into the house. Once inside, they hog-tied Magdalena Patpat, another helper, before ransacking the house. The suspects, including Criselda, made their getaway in a Ford Lynx with a laptop computer and an unknown amount of cash and jewellery. 28-year-old Tioseco was the founder and editor of Criticine, an online magazine devoted to Southeast Asian cinema, and his film criticism had appeared in the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Journal, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and the San-Francisco Bay Guardian. 29-year-old Bohinc worked as a freelance film journalist in Manila, and had worked as a programmer for festivals with Tioseco as well as serving as president of FIPRESCI Slovenia..
