13/1/2010: 3 Idiots
Smashes Bollywood Record
Raj Kumar Hirani’s comedy 3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, smashed Bollywood records in January 2010 when it recorded a worldwide gross of Rs 315 crores (£42.55 million) after just 19 days on release. The previous record-holder was 2008’s Ghajini, in which Khan also starred, which managed a comparatively measly Rs 260 crores (approximately £35.1 million). The film, which was seen by more than 60 million people around the world, broke box office records in America, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Fiji and Kenya, while cinemas in India had to provide additional screenings to cope with demand. Speaking of the film’s unprecedented success, Amit Khanna, the chairman of Reliance BIG Entertainment, said, ‘3 Idiots has opened new vistas for the Indian film industry. The huge response across continents reinforces our belief that a well-made, well-exploited film can still create magic in the darkened auditorium. We are proud to be associated with Vinod, Aamir, Raju and the talented team of 3 Idiots.’ The success of the film was no doubted aided by the buzz created by a publicity stunt which saw Aamir Khan reported as missing (he plays a student who disappears in the film). The film subsequently enjoyed the widest release ever for a Bollywood film, playing on a total of 2126 screens.
