11/1/2010: Charlie
Chaplin to be Reborn as 3D Avatar
Nearly one hundred years after Charles Chaplin first introduced his tramp character to the world, French media groups Method Animation and MK2, the owner of the international rights to Chaplin’s films, announced that the Indian animation and special effects company DQ Animation would make a series of six-minute animated films featuring the Tramp for cinema and television. The announcement followed the succession conclusion of an €8m deal between the companies that received the approved of the Chaplin family. It was planned that in addition to recreating gags from some of Chaplin’s 70 short films the animations would also include new material. Aton Soumache, the chairman of Method Animation, said the tramp wouldn’t be ‘a realistic portrayal but more like a puppet in an offbeat universe… We've been working for more than a year on the graphics concept to find an original way of adapting Chaplin's world. We'll put him in modern situations, but at the same time keeping his poetic, child-like view of the world with a retro feel.’ It was hoped that the films would prove as popular as the Mr Bean cartoons.
