29/1/2010: Warner Bros Move to Buy Leavesden Studios

Warner Brothers applied to the Three Rivers District Council and Watford Borough Council for planning permission to buy and refurbish the Leavesden Studios in North London in late January 2010.   Contained within the application were proposals to expand the studio’s visual effects, prosthetics, animatronics and film editing facilities, as well as raising the prospect of studio tours with a plan to allow public access to the studio grounds.

Warners filmed the entire Harry Potter franchise at the studio, as well as Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Dark Knight, and the planned development of the site was seen as ensuring its future following the completion of shooting of Harry Potter later in 2010.   The studio stands on the site of the former Roll-Royce factory at Leavesden Aerodrome, just north of Watford.  It was turned into a studio for the production of the James Bond film Goldeneye (1995) when Pinewood, the franchise’s traditional home, was unavailable.

A Warner Bros spokesperson said: ‘Warner Bros holds Leavesden Studios in the highest esteem as the home of our much-loved Harry Potter films. This proposal is central to our long-term plans to invest in the local production community, to create local and industry employment opportunities, and to continue the legacy of exceptional British filmmaking at Leavesden and across the UK.’
