26/3/2010: Orson Welles
to Make New Movie 25 Years After His Death
In late March 2010, Harvey Lowry, the President of Drac Studios, a company best known for its special effects work on such movies as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2009), but which had since branched out into film production, announced that the studio was to build a film around recently discovered tapes recorded by Orson Welles shortly before his death in 1985. The five tapes featured Welles narrating his friend Robert Leeds’ self-published children’s novel ‘Christmas Tails.’ Since they were recorded, apart from a few copies made to distribute with the book, the tapes remained at Leeds’ Las Vegas home. Lowry first learned of the possible existence of the recordings while discussing an unrelated project with colleague Karl Fritz in December 2008. He then tracked down Robert Leeds, who confirmed their existence and despatched them to Lowry’s Burbank offices. Lowry immediately optioned the book, but the tapes were in such a poor condition that they had to be put through a chemical bath and baking process before they could be digitised. The story tells of how Santa’s dog recruits the aid of other mutts to save Christmas after all of Santa’s reindeer fall ill.
