12/2/2010: Children
Terrorised by Paranormal Activity.
In February 2010, the Italian Parent’s Association demanded an age limit of 18 be placed on Oren Peli’s low-budget horror film Paranormal Activity following reports of dozens of cinema-goers suffering panic attacks after watching the movie. One 14-year-old girl was reported by an emergency services spokesman to have been rushed to hospital ‘in a state of paralysis.’ The film was released in Italy with no age restriction despite receiving a 15 rating in the UK and an adult R rating in America. The Association claimed that ‘thousands’ of children were even terrified by the trailer for the film on television, which contained a voice over describing it as the film that ‘terrorised all America.’ Defence Minister Ignaziao La Russa, joined demands for an adult rating, saying, ‘For the past two weeks a trailer has been shown obsessively on TV and is terrifying thousands of children… It’s a terrible thing. I took notice because my seven-year-old son told me, ‘Daddy, I’m scared.’’
