30/1/2010: Rip Torn Arrested for Bank Robbery

Rip Torn

Police officers were sent to investigate an alarm going off at a local branch of the Litchfield bank in the early hours of Saturday 30th January 2010.   They arrived to find evidence of a break-in and their report described how they confronted a white male within the premises who was later identified as Elmore Rip Torn… It was then discovered that this individual was armed with a loaded revolver and highly intoxicated.’

In an interview with the website TMZ, Mark Macomber, the CEO of Litchfield Bankcorp said it appeared that Torn hadnt appeared to have intended any harm to anyone or, in fact, to steal money from the bank.   In his intoxicated condition the actor appeared to have mistaken the bank for his own house, and when his front door key failed to open the banks door, Torn decided to break in through a rear window.   Once inside the bank, he promptly passed out.

Because he was in possession of a firearm, Torn was immediately taken into custody and bail was set at $100,000 (£62,500).   He was charged with five criminal offences, including carrying a firearm without a permit and while under the influence of alcohol, first-degree burglary, and criminal mischief and trespass.

Torn had a record of alcohol-related offences to his name: in 2004 a jury acquitted him of drink-driving when he refused to take a breathalyser test after the car he was driving collided with a taxi in New York.   Two years later he pleaded guilty to drink-driving after colliding with a tractor in New York State, for which he was banned for 90 days and fined.   In 2009 he was again found guilty of drink-driving after he was caught driving his 1994 Subaru estate in the emergency lane with a Christmas tree strapped to the roof.  He was given probation for that offence.
