6/7/2010: The BFI's Search for 75 Lost British Films

The Mountain Eagle (1926)Not happy with owning close to one million films and TV programmes in its vast archives, the British Film Institute put out a call on 6th July 2010 for all film lovers and aficionados to check under their beds and in the dustiest corners of their attics to aid them in their quest to locate 75 British films long believed to have been lost.    The films ranged from Sherlock Holme’s first screen appearance in the 1914 version of Study in Scarlet to the 1983 oddity Where is Parsifal? featuring Ron Moody and Orson Welles.   Top of the list was Alfred Hitchcock’s The Mountain Eagle, a silent melodrama made in 1926.   The film was not one of the master of suspense’s best - in fact, when informed that the film was believed lost Hitch was reputed to have said he wasn’t sorry.   Other titles on the list were acknowledged by the Institute as being chosen more for their historical and social significance than their quality.

The Institute conducted a similar search in 1992 which yielded 16 finds, and hoped for similar results in 2010.   It also launched a campaign in tandem with the search for lost films to obtain donations from the public to contribute towards the restoration of British films that had fallen into serious disrepair.
