9/9/2010: Screen East Goes Under Amid Financial Irregularities

Dean Spanley (2008)

On 9th September 2010, Screen East, the Norwich-based screen agency responsible for financing local film-making and promoting the region as a location for location shooting, announced that it was insolvent.   The company’s Chief Executive, Laurie Hayward said, ‘The directors of Screen East have concluded that the company is insolvent and can't meet its debts as they fall due. The directors have taken advice and appointed an insolvency practitioner to take the company into administration.’

Hayward also confirmed that Melvin Welton, the agency’s 61-year-old Finance Manager had been arrested by police on suspicion of theft and released on bail.

The agency was funded by the UK Film Council, which was itself facing the axe following government spending cuts, and the East of England Development Agency (EEDA).   The company employed 12 people at its main office at The Forum in Norwich, and also had a locations department at Leavesden Studios in Watford, Hertfordshire.

The agency invested in the 2008 Peter O’Toole and Sam Neill film Dean Spanley.
