11/9/2010: Tarantino Accused of Favouritism at Venice Film Festival

Somewhere (2010)

The decisions made by the jury regarding the allocation of awards at the Venice Film Festival were called into question when Italian journalists accused jury president Quentin Tarantino of favouring ex-lovers, friends and associates.   The protests arose after Tarantino’s former lover Sofia Coppola won the festival’s major prize, the Golden Lion, for her film Somewhere, and his friend Alex de la Iglesia won two prizes for his film Balada trist de trompeta, which was widely panned by Italian critics.   Tarantino’s mentor Monte Hellman, was also awarded a lifetime achievement prize by the jury.

Tarantino denied that he had shown any favouritism, insisting that ‘I was just going to literally respond to the film. There was no me steering any direction.’

Film critic Paolo Mereghetti of Correre della Sera wrote, ‘The presidency of Quentin Tarantino runs the risk of turning into the most obvious conflict of interest possible if you remember that Somewhere and Road to Nowhere were charming and interesting in their own ways, but nothing more than that.’
