100 Chinese-Language Films Announced at the Golden Horse Festival
In
January 2011 the
Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival announced the results of
a poll to find the ‘100 Greatest Chinese-Language Films. 122 industry
professionals, including directors, actors, producers and film scholars took
part in the survey. Many of those taking part originated from Taiwan, which
it was felt may have consequently given the survey a skewed result. Each
voter selected up to 30 films from a spreadsheet containing 601 titles,
although they were permitted to nominate films that didn’t appear on the
list. The official selection of films was heavily
biased towards more
recent releases with pre-1980 titles making up just 30% of the total
films. The oldest film to make the top 100 was
Sun Yu’s
Little Toys from
1933, which sneaked in at number 91.
