30/3/2011: Lyudmila Gurchenko Dies at the Age of 75
Lyudmila Markovna Gurchenko was born in Kharkiv, Ukriane on 12th November 1935. She attended the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow, and shot to fame in 1956 when she starred in Eldar Ryazanov’s musical Carnival Night. However, her sudden success drew criticism from Soviet cultural media who accuses her style of being too Western, and of receiving a wage above that set by the state. As a result of this criticism her next film, Devushka s Gitaroi (Lyudmila, A Girl with a Guitar) (1958) failed badly at the box office, effectively ending her film career as a leading lady for the next two decades. She spent much of this time touring the country with her musical shows, until a string of film roles in the mid-1970s helped highlight her potential as a dramatic actress. In 1982, she again worked under Eldar Ryazanov in A Station for Two, and her role as a forty-something waitress made her star of the screen once more, leading to a resurrected career that surpassed her success of the 1950s. She was married twice, once to the legendary Soviet singer Iosif Kobzon. She had one daughter, two grandchildren and one great granddaughter. On 13th March 2011 Gurchenko broke her hip in a fall near her house and underwent an operation the following day. She died on 30th March 2011, possibly of complications arising from the surgery. As news of her death was made public, President Dmitry Medvedev described her death as ‘an irreplaceable loss for national culture.’
